World's Oldest Barbershop in London Offers £60 Cuts with Royal Tradition
Truefitt & Hill, founded in the UK in 1805, serves everyday clients with the same historical level of care given to monarchs. The establishment stands out for its British heritage and attention to detail.
Located in the St James's area of London, United Kingdom, Truefitt & Hill is recognized as the world's oldest barbershop. With 221 years of history, the space offers a haircut for £60, an experience that seeks to treat the common man with the same prestige reserved for royalty. For those working in the industry, the location represents a model of technical excellence and classic hospitality.
The shop opened on October 21, 1805, the date of the Battle of Trafalgar, by Francis William Truefitt. Since King George III entrusted the brand with creating his wigs, the company has accumulated a history of serving nine reigning monarchs and the aristocracy over the decades. The interior walls display portraits and plaques in honor of these illustrious clients, creating an imposing atmosphere for first-time visitors.
Despite its luxury reputation, creative director Austin Mutti-Mewse states that the brand does not see itself solely as a high-end business. He highlights that the true competitive advantage is the British heritage accumulated over time, something that money alone cannot buy. This stance has attracted a new customer base in the era of social media, including influencers and young men who save up to live this unique experience.
During the 30-minute service, the focus is on meticulous attention to detail. Barber Michael, who has worked at the location for years, explained that the profession requires constant learning, as new techniques can be learned even from interns. He emphasized: "You learn something new every day".
The process includes everything from using a citrus-scented hair moisturizer to the careful removal of each stray hair before the client leaves. The team takes pride in maintaining a refined service that was historically exclusive to the upper classes but is now accessible to the general public.
Although the main store remains on St James Street, Truefitt & Hill has expanded its operations globally. The business has grown beyond traditional barbering services, also exploring the skincare and fragrance sectors, consolidating its brand as a symbol of tradition and quality in the international market.
