In London, England, barber Jim Shaw, owner of the TONI&GUY Billericay location, warned industry professionals about the challenges that cold weather poses to hair health. With the arrival of low temperatures, the combination of freezing outdoor air and indoor heating strips natural moisture from the scalp and strands. This process leads to dryness, breakage, and increased hair fall, problems that can compromise a client's appearance during the year-end holidays.

To avoid these consequences, Shaw recommends adapting the washing routine to each person's specific scalp type. The goal is to prevent the skin's protective barrier from drying out excessively while maintaining control over sweat and oil buildup. When the scalp becomes dry in winter, it tends to produce excess sebum as compensation, resulting in greasy roots and brittle ends.

The expert suggests using gentle formulas, such as sulfate-free shampoos, to clean the roots without irritating the skin. "Having the correct washing routine can prevent flaking caused by winter dryness and keep hair from becoming weak, dull, or prone to static electricity," Shaw stated. This approach helps maintain hydrolipidic balance even during the coldest months.

Wearing hats also requires special attention at the barbershop. Aligning the cut with the style of hat worn by the client prevents flat marks and reduces friction damage. Cuts with short sides, such as fades or short crops, prevent hair from accumulating uncomfortably under tight beanies. Keeping the top of the hair lightly textured, rather than stiffened with gel, prevents the formation of deep, hard-to-correct creases.

Shaw advises skipping heavy gels and opting for light matte pastes or sea salt sprays to keep strands flexible under the pressure of the accessory. Additionally, incorporating a deep conditioner into the routine is essential to replenish lost moisture. Cold air removes natural oils, but proper conditioning increases strand elasticity, allowing them to bend rather than break when removed from the hat.

Finally, regular cuts during winter are fundamental to prevent split ends, caused by dry indoor heat, from traveling up the shaft. Removing these weak areas before they cause structural damage helps maintain the style's shape and ensures a cleaner, more polished look for the season's special occasions.
