Barbers Recommend Six Ideal Cuts for Men Over 50
Experts in London suggest styles like the slick back and textured crop, focusing on embracing gray hair and controlling volume.
In London, England, two renowned professionals in the barbering industry analyzed the best haircut options for men who have passed the fifty-year mark. The discussion is relevant to the sector because it addresses the specific challenges of this age group, such as thinning hair, the emergence of gray strands, and a receding hairline.
Max Oakley, founder of the Supply 91 network, and Caspar Finch, stylist at Hershesons, agree that the current trend is to embrace natural changes rather than trying to hide one's age. They cite figures like George Clooney and Idris Elba as references for mature elegance, suggesting that accepting white hair can add character and distinction to one's look.
Among the recommendations is the slick back, which Oakley describes as an option that works well both with lots of volume and a receding hairline. The technique involves applying styling paste to damp hair and using fingers to create a natural, slightly messy finish, balancing the relaxed style with a well-groomed beard.
The cut known as the "warrior crop" was also highlighted by Oakley. Although often associated with youthful looks on social media, it can be adapted into a softer, easier-to-maintain version for mature men, requiring only a final touch-up with paste for everyday wear.
For those with fine hair, the short textured crop is pointed out as a classic solution. Finch recommends using a razor to create loose texture or texturizing powders to reinforce volume. Another alternative is the classic cut, shorter on the sides and nape, maintaining length and texture on top, ideal for thick hair.
Finally, the experts suggest the well-defined natural afro and the soft side part. Finch notes that many men avoid the blow dryer for fear of flattening their hair, making the side part a practical alternative that does not rely on heat to stay in place.
