Viking barbershop in Porto blends Nordic aesthetics, tattoos, and craft beer
In Porto, Asgard offers an immersive experience that combines beard cuts with biker culture and video games. The family business has four locations and around 30 professionals.
In the city of Porto, Portugal, Asgard barbershop redefined the traditional concept by integrating Norse mythology into its physical space. Located on Rua de Oliveira Monteiro, near Casa da Música, the location offers clients an experience that goes beyond haircuts and beard trims, incorporating tattoos, craft beers, and thematic decor. For those working in barbering, this case is relevant as it demonstrates how creating a strong visual concept can differentiate a business in a competitive market.
The project was born from the shared passion of father Wesley Aires, 53 years old, and son Wesley Aires Jr., 29 years old. The idea emerged in 2018 when they identified an opportunity to combine men's beauty services with specific cultural elements. What started as a single space has transformed into a network with four stores in the Greater Porto area, employing approximately 30 professionals.
The brand identity is so striking that it attracted international attention. Wesley Aires Jr. sent a message to actor Alexander Ludwig, known for playing Bjorn Ironside in the series “Vikings”. The artist responded via video, expressing his impression with the business's growth and the founders' fidelity to Nordic culture. This interaction validated the brand's positioning before a global audience.
In addition to barbering services, Asgard has diversified its revenue streams. The company launched its own line of hair and beard products, as well as a collection of three craft beers in partnership with brewery Deuses do Malte. The beverage labels were created by artists from different nationalities, and the varieties represent the colors of the traditional barber pole.
The environment also reflects other passions of the founders, such as biker culture, cars, and video games. This cultural mix allowed for strategic collaborations, such as the one carried out with PlayStation Portugal for the launch of “God of War Ragnarök”. The campaign included a contest that generated great engagement on the brand's social media.
Despite the exotic theme, service prices remain aligned with the local market. A haircut costs 15 euros and the combined hair and beard service is priced at 22 euros, values uniform across all locations. The spaces also feature resident tattoo artists and sell merchandise items, consolidating Asgard as a cultural hub for the male audience.
