In London, England, barber Jack Gibson from the renowned Ruffians shared a practical routine for those who want to grow a mustache with a professional look. This guidance is relevant for barbershop professionals, as it helps manage client expectations and reduces common errors during the initial growth process.

The expert highlights that genetics determine much of the final result, including density and speed. According to research published in Nature Communications, there is no proven method to abruptly change this natural pace. Therefore, the goal of the routine is not to change genes, but rather to create favorable conditions for the hair to reach its ideal shape without avoidable obstacles.

The first recommendation is patience. Gibson advises waiting several weeks before making significant trims, as uneven growth and itching are normal phases. "A mustache doesn't appear out of nowhere," explained the barber. During this period, he suggests combing or brushing the hair daily to direct it correctly, avoiding premature trims that could compromise future coverage.

Defining a style before starting is also crucial. Knowing the desired shape allows you to identify which areas should be preserved and which need spot cleaning. This avoids the risk of running clippers over zones that would be necessary to complete the chosen design, adjusting expectations to the actual hair distribution.

Another important point is demystifying the idea that shaving frequently makes a mustache thicker. Gibson states that this is a total myth, since cutting only affects the tip, not the follicle. Trims should be reserved for correcting split ends or maintaining defined edges, without compromising the length achieved.

Finally, hygiene and nutrition play fundamental roles. Washing and conditioning the hair two to three times a week reduces roughness and protects the underlying skin. The use of oils with jojoba and argan, applied moderately in the morning and at night, helps with hydration. A diet rich in proteins and vitamins also contributes to keratin health, ensuring a strong and healthy mustache.
