Emirati builds barbershop empire in Abu Dhabi and attracts international celebrities
Amal Salah AlBarout founded Uptown Barbershop in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The establishment, which is turning eight years old, has become a meeting point for athletes and artists.
In Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, businesswoman Amal Salah AlBarout built a business that defied local market expectations. Uptown Barbershop, located in the Al Muroor neighborhood, is celebrating its eighth anniversary and already boasts illustrious clients, including NBA basketball players and well-known names from Hollywood cinema.
For those working in the barbershop trade, this case is relevant for showing how visual identity and talent curation can transform a discreet space into a global reference. The shop is located on a mezzanine, invisible to passersby on the main street, but its interior reflects an urban style inspired by New York neighborhoods, featuring a yellow ceiling and a young team.
AlBarout, who studied finance and worked for nearly six years selling Abu Dhabi as a tourist destination abroad, spotted the opportunity while helping a friend. She designed the concept, selected the barbers, and chose the name of the establishment. Initial success was driven exclusively by word of mouth, without major advertising campaigns.
The founder highlights that the focus is not just financial, but community-oriented. "I wanted to create a place where customers would walk in and forget everything outside," she stated. This philosophy attracted professionals who often came to the city for the first time, recruited directly through social media.
In addition to the barbershop, Amal works in the theme park sector on Yas Island and co-organizes community events, such as TEDx editions aimed at young people. Her trajectory demonstrates that the combination of modern aesthetics and hospitality can position a city on the international map, even in sectors traditionally dominated by men.
