In the city of Ceduna, located on the west coast of South Australia, two brothers opened the first barbershop in almost five decades. The opening in the urban center represents a historic milestone for the remote region, which had been without this type of specialized service for a long time.

Tjerayh Coleman-Ware started cutting hair at age 15 as a pastime, as there were no professionals available within the family. What was just fun between the brothers evolved into a professional passion. Initially, the space operated in a family shed, where he attended various local clients while developing his skills.

After 12 years of dedication and informal work in the shed, Tjerayh decided to open a formal business with his brother, Tjeryan Coleman-Ware. The duo obtained the necessary qualifications with the support of the Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation last year, consolidating the commercial operation.

The establishment is the only one on the city's main street that is 100% Indigenous in ownership and management. This has great social relevance, as about 25% of the local population is composed of Indigenous people. The presence of the business in the center reinforces the cultural and economic identity of the community.

In addition to haircuts and beard trims, the place is becoming a point of community connection. The local health service Yadu Health will rent the space for a special event this month, called Clip and Yarns. The initiative seeks to bring together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people for conversations and personal care.

For residents, seeing the business prosper is a source of pride. Tjeryan highlights the satisfaction of seeing clients arrive looking disheveled and leave renewed, with smiles on their faces. The barbershop symbolizes hope and renewal for Ceduna.
