The international hairdressing community bids farewell to John Frieda, the renowned British professional who passed away at the age of 75. The news was confirmed by his team on November 3rd, highlighting him not only as an icon of the profession but also as an inspiring mentor to all who worked alongside him.

Born in 1951 into a family of industry professionals, Frieda began his career at his father's salon before training under the legendary Leonard of Mayfair. In 1976, he opened his first establishment in London and created the famous Purdey cut for actress Joanna Lumley, which became a fashion phenomenon. Among his clients were iconic figures such as Princess Diana, Twiggy, Madonna, and Nicole Kidman.

In the late 1980s, he moved to New York, where he lived for approximately 12 years. It was during this period that he developed much of his business empire, creating his own hair care brand and opening salons in Manhattan and Los Angeles.

Beyond commercial success, Frieda championed technical excellence and team development. In one of his last interviews, given to the British Beauty Council in June 2026 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first store, he emphasized the importance of understanding barbershop work as a service to others.

According to the professional, "if you have a client in front of you, instead of thinking about money or what you are earning by cutting their hair, just think about the action. The reward is giving them the best cut of their life." This vision summarizes the essence of the legacy left by one of the biggest names in the history of the profession.

For those working in barbershop services, Frieda's trajectory serves as an example of how the combination of refined technique and a humanized philosophy can transform a simple service into a memorable experience.
