Louisville, United States — Breckinridge Metropolitan High School recently opened its own in-house barbershop, marking the first case of its kind at an alternative school in Jefferson County. The project was developed in partnership with the Sharp Futures Foundation, a nonprofit organization that uses personal care sessions as a tool to provide mentorship and mental health support to students.

The initiative aims to allow students free access to beauty services, but it also has a clear strategic goal: combating absenteeism. According to data from the Kentucky Department of Education, in the 2024-2025 school year, nearly 90% of Breckinridge Metro students were considered chronically absent.

Kumar Rashad, a math teacher at the institution, explains that many students are transferred to the school due to behavioral issues that occurred at other schools or in the community. For him, physical appearance is a crucial factor for these young people's self-esteem. "Problems happen when students feel they don't look good, because then they don't want another student to make fun of them or they are feeling bad about themselves," Rashad stated.

In addition to the behavioral aspect, the space offers career opportunities. King Thompson, a senior student, dreams of becoming a professional barber and sees the new facility as a way to boost his plans. He recalls learning by watching his mother attend barbershop school, where he served as a model for practical exercises.

C.J. Carter, founder of the Sharp Futures Foundation, highlights that the barbershop environment facilitates trust-building. According to him, many students share personal details with the professionals in the space that they wouldn't dare tell even their teachers or school counselors, due to the relationship of trust established during the sessions.

Shawnta Chappell, an esthetician at the organization, notes that the program creates a positive expectation for the school day. Students report anxiety about attending classes because they know they will leave the space looking better and, consequently, have a more productive day. Breckinridge Metro is also the first Sharp Futures location to feature an integrated beauty salon, ensuring access to services for the young women at the school.

The school administration expects that the combination of barbershop and salon will provide students with additional motivation to walk through the institution's doors daily.
